Readers' letters of the day

From The Metro:

So, Gordon Brown is an avid reader of Metro and thinks it is important the voices of Metro readers are heard? In that case, I'd like to ask him to call a general election. Pretty please. With sugar on top. Are you reading this Mr Brown?

Chris Irvine, Kent.

In response to M Gordon - Australia is not having its hottest summer on record, it is having its hottest summer since 1908. If the global-warming doom-mongers use anecdotal evidence, such as intermittent hot weather, as proof of global warming, then they shouldn;t be surprised if they are rebutted by those employing hte same style of argument.

If anything, the fires in Australia are a lesson that if green fundamentalists who have infested the national parks and wildlife services in Australia would let farmers conduct back burning as they see fit, we wouldn't see fires of such intesity.

I had suspected that lack of burning was what had made the fire so bad. The same has been responsible for fires in California threatening suburban neighbourhoods. If the Aussies are going to charge arsonists with murder they should equally charge those "environmentalists" whose understanding of ecology was so slight they didn't know, or pretended not to know, intermittent fires are natural & without them big ones are inevitable.

When we lived in Queensland people often complained about bloody environmentalists stopping precautionary burns. The state government was then Labor, who were seeking green votes.

When we lived in South Australia, people pointed out that it was The Fashionable Left who had urged people to give up the old-fashioned habit of planting deciduous European trees and shrubs, and to enjoy native species instead. If a fire starts, the European species form a good radiation shield. The native species give off flammable vapour and spread the fire rapidly.

Ah, but all records begin at a point the green brigade deem it appropriate to their case. This is backed by politicians as it allows the extraction of tax from the pliant population.

Another point in the burning of victoria might well be the widespread growing of pine plantations. I think the replacement of farms by pine started back in the 70s or thereabout.

I was aware of the natural occurance of such bush fires but not that state governments were responsible for stopping precautionary burning.
It is hardly surprising that the resulting conflagration has been so bad.
