She didn't see it coming !?

At the risk of generalising and being arrested by The Thought Police (I'll add links to support these contentions at a later stage, if required):

Who are most likely to commit violent crimes*?
- Men aged 15 to 30
- Drug dealers
- Jealous Muslims
- South Americans

Who are most likely to become a victim of violent crime?
- Young women
- Travelling alone
- Abroad

While I have the utmost symathy for her family and friends, I've got to ask: what the f*** was she thinking?

* The only other major category that I can think of, Africans, is about the only one that didn't apply in this case.

In my experience women note all of the shortfalls in their partners, and then set about rectifying them. She obviously took on too much with this evil character.

Incidently, having been married for some time I now consider myself to be fully rectified.

Quite. Same with that poor girl in India.

It would be nice to believe that we live in an ideal world but we don't and young women especially have to be very careful,

As John says, women always marry someone for what they are and then immediately set about changing them. I too am fully compliant after 24 years of marriage..

Kind of depends on what you term "violent crime". The police speech to our freshers at the beginning of a new academic year claims that males from 16-30 and the most likely to be victims of violent crime, including rape. Never bothered to look up the figures to see if they are right though...

" . . Africans, is about the only one that didn't apply in this case."

Considering there was a huge infusion of African blood into Brazil through the Portuguese slave trade and looking at the photo, I'd be amazed if this young man did not have a high proportion of his ancestry deriving from Africa.

Yes yes I know we all have our origins in Africa but not in the last 500 years.

JE, GS, I am not and never will be fully rectified.

Jock, yes, in the UK that is true (not sure about rape) but the figure is skewed by the fact that men go out drinking and fighting in the evenings.

U, thanks, I didn't make that point because I thought it would be pushing my luck.

If you run an African slave trade, you must expect "a huge infusion of African blood, unless you run it the way the Arabs ran theirs, which didn't, shall we say, leave a strong trace on the y chromosome.

That's one less shelf-stacker at Tescos.

I was going to say the same as Jock, men are both the likely perpetrators and victims of violent crime in the UK at least.

The lad sounds so psychopathic that it is rather hard to believe it wasn't apparent early on in the relationship.
