There was a video of this on the BBC yesterday, all good stuff, but the best bit** is in today's Metro:

A trusty BB gun and a blow pipe armed with steel darts took care of the buoyant balloons. 'I'd go to 30,000ft* if I didn't shoot a balloon down periodically,' Mr Couch added.

Any lesser mortal would have taken a pair of scissors or something.
