The air BELOW the clouds ...Din, you are incorrect.<br /><br />The air BELOW the clouds is warmer than the effective temperature for the reasons explained; the air ABOVE the clouds is cooler than the effective temperature for equal and opposite reasons.<br /><br />This is another Achilles Heel of the greenhouse gas theory. It implies that the atmosphere 'insulates' i.e. keeps things warmer than effective temp.
