"Global Warming is Caused by Ozone Depletion, Not Greenhouse Gases"

At last, a theory that stacks up!

See ozonedepletiontheory.info by Peter Ward for detailed explanations (and also very conscientious debunking of CO2-related theories as a bonus).

A lot of it is beyond my understanding, but on the whole it seems internally and externally consistent - temperature increases match CFC emissions much better than they match CO2 levels (that was the only thing that bothered me. Shouldn't you compare temperature increases with ozone levels?) - and very plausible. If we have to make do without spray cans and use different coolants in our fridges etc, I'm sure we can manage.

If reading is not your thing, his summary video (one hour long!) is here:

OTOH, I was reading up about that gruesome twosome, the EGR and the DPF and learned that one of the reasons given for trying to cut down on NOx emissions is that they break down and cause ozone, which is obviously seen to be a bad thing.

B, ozone at breathable altitudes is poisonous to animals. Whereby "poisonous" means we evolved in the absence of it. It's mainly higher up.

Ozone in the stratosphere is A Good Thing because it blocks UV rays and keeps temperature stable.

Who are EGR and DPF?

Idiocy.

Hmm, I was taught that ozone is produced naturally by lightning, therefore,to end up in the ozone layer, it must be lighter than air, in which case ozone produced by NOx must follow the same route. I think this is a bit like "good" CO2, plant food and "bad" CO2, evil man-made gas destroying the Earth. Apparently the Tube was (is?) full of ozone from the arcing of the pickups on the live rails.

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation (valve), fine on petrol engine, a menace on diesels.
DPF = diesel particulate filter

Unknown, ta, LOLZ.

B, O3 is not lighter than O2 or N2. I'm not sure why most of it is "up there". But as a matter of fact, it is.

And O3 at breathable altitudes is unhealthy, that's just another fact.

Ta re EGR and DPF.

Yes but at what concentrations? Drinking a measure of whisky should do you no harm, drinking a whole bottle could kill you. These days, it's difficult to know what to believe because the purveying of scientific knowledge has been subject to political, ethical and religious considerations. Back when I was at school, this didn't happen, by and large. Nobody had yet discovered that science could be used as a weapon to scare people into behaving in a particular way. We were not taught that O3 was a bad thing , indeed the popular belief was that it was a good thing, and that there was lots of it by the seaside. That may have been wrong on the location, but not necessarily completely wrong.

Mark Wadsworth said...

B, I'm not sure it's relevant here whether breathing O3 is harmful or not.

The seaside/ozone thing was an old wives' tale.

Re using science to scare people, that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the constant lies. When scientists told us that global nuclear warfare would wipe out most life and make life unbearable for the survivors, that was very scary but it was also true AFAIAA, so fine.

EGR. DPF. And DEF aka Adblu - urea injection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust_fluid

EGR does this:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation

Are people here aware of the 2013 University of Waterloo study which is also pushing the "CFCs caused global warming" theory?

Mark Wadsworth said...

GC, yes, but Peter Ward explains it better.
