According to Freakonomics having a swimming pool is more dangerous than a gun in the house.
I do wonder if they are worth the hassle.
LF, "it is" and "no it's not", respectively.
1) I didn't want to be dogmatic because there are those who disagree
2) I didn't want to say definitely not because there are always crazy people who disagree - saying that I think you are probably right about them not being worth it, unless you are rich enough to pay for a lifeguard and have health conditions that stop you doing other forms of exercise (so almost always a bad idea).

They aren't. My father owned a house in France that had a pool in the garden and the maintenance was more trouble than it was worth. And that's France where the weather is much better.
Join a high end gym and go off peak. You'll have the place to yourself anyway.
LF, a house near us with a swimming pool in back garden was up for sale. It was significantly cheaper than similar houses on same estate.
TS, I once stayed at a house in South if France with a swimming pool on the terrace. Was bloody fantastic, you could see the sea while you were swimming.
But I wasn't paying for the upkeep etc.
Mark, was it cheaper by more than the cost of aggregate to fill it and turn it into a pond? If so,it was a bargain.
B, it was a large terraced house, so would have been a right faff.
